Three-time Big 12 Champion Steele Wasik from Medina, Ohio, ranks top-10 in the country with his personal-best total of 5,817 points in indoor heptathlon. Steele trained at SPIRE with Coach Charlie Powell during his time at St. Edwards in Cleveland.
“While being a world class level athlete for seven years, I was able to live the dream of traveling the world and seeing every state in the U.S. Athletics taught me every skill I needed for life including time management, performing under pressure, managing relationships and teamwork. Representing the USA in international competitions is my fall time favorite experience.”
In 2018, SPIRE trainee Wasik competed for the United States team at the Pan American Cup, underwent an operation on his right Achilles in March and graduated in the spring with two degrees from University of Texas. He went on to compete for Tennessee in 2019 in his final year of athletic eligibility while completing work on his master’s degree in finance.
SPIRE Director of Track and Field Charlie Powell had this to say…“Steele is one of those athletes who loves to learn. He was an absolute joy to coach because he not only had a phenomenal amount of natural ability, but he always wanted to learn more. Why this, why that. What’s the best way to do this. How can I be more successful in that. Tell me more. Teach me. Teach me. It was awesome, and a great deal of fun too.”
“I chose SPIRE because it’s the best facility in the country. My favorite part of training at SPIRE was the coaches! I made so many great connections in the sport. I am truly prepared for anything from the professional training at SPIRE. My biggest accomplishment is being a 4x USA Team Member. My goal is to compete in The 2021 Olympic Games.”
